HyperConvergence Infrastructure : An Introduction to Dell EMC VxRail

Updated: Jun 16, 2020

I am fan of VMware technologies and have worked on few amazing platforms. VMware vSAN is one of them and the reason which drove me towards HCI (HyperConverged Infrastructure). Lets talk about the fastest growing hyper-converged systems worldwide which is the standard for simplifying and modernizing VMware environments, regardless of where an organization starts or ends their IT transformation. That's VxRail !

VxRail is jointly engineered between Dell EMC and VMware, optimized for vSAN and Dell EMC PowerEdge platforms and fully integrated and pre-tested with VMware vSAN. This allows customers to seamlessly extend existing VMware environments, simplifying deployment and enabling IT organizations to leverage in-house expertise and operational processes. Tight integration with VMware technologies ensures that VxRail Appliances across the infrastructure can be easily managed from a central location. VxRail accelerates the adoption of HCI and creates certainty in IT transformation.

Breif Introduction

VxRail Appliances are the industry’s only hyper-converged appliance featuring kernel-layer integration between VMware vSAN and the vSphere hypervisor, delivering unique and unmatched performance and efficiency. As a fully optimized and supported VMware-based solution, the appliances also integrate with VMware’s cloud management platform and end-user computing solutions. Each VxRail Appliance is also a foundational infrastructure platform, which makes it simple to introduce advanced VMware SDDC offerings like NSX, vRealize Automation, and vRealize Operations.

The Dell EMC VxRail Appliance allows you to start small – with as few as three nodes - and grow incrementally, scaling capacity and performance easily and non-disruptively up to 64 nodes per cluster. Single-node scaling and storage capacity expansion provide a predictable, “pay-as-you-grow” approach for future scale up and out as your business and user requirements evolve without up-front planning. (2 Node deployments are also available, but do not permit any scalability beyond the 2 nodes.)

EXTEND AND SIMPLIFY VMWARE ENVIRONMENTS

Managed through the well-known VMware vCenter Server, VxRail Appliances provide existing VMware customers with an experience they are familiar with, allowing them to seamlessly integrate VxRail into their existing IT infrastructure with convenience of sizing and scaling features (scale up and scale out).

PortFolios

· G Series – General-purpose appliances for broad hyper-converged use cases. Up to four nodes fit in a single 2U chassis. Available in all-flash or hybrid configurations.

· E Series – Everywhere from data center core to edge deployments, the combination of density, drive groups, and balance of resources in a low profile 1U form factor enables it to be deployed for a wide range of use cases, including the newly supported T4 GPUs. Available in hybrid, all-flash, and all NVMe configurations.

· V Series – VDI-optimized graphics ready appliances with support for up to six graphics accelerators (when utilizing T4 GPUs) for specialized use cases such as high-end 2D/3D visualization. Each appliance has one node per 2U chassis. Available in all-flash or hybrid configurations.

· P Series – Performance intensive appliances optimized for heavy workloads such as databases. Each appliance has one node per 2U chassis. Also available in all-NVMe with the P580N.

· S Series – Storage dense appliances for demanding applications such as virtualized Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Exchange, big data, and analytics. Each appliance has one node per 2U chassis. Available in hybrid configurations only.
